Grasshopper

Visiting Credenhill Park Wood in the wee small hours of the morning, the air was filled with the sounds of tawny owls twitting and twooing at each other and the sounds of chirping insects.photo of grasshopper

Whilst crawling through the wet grass failing to photograph a little frog, I encountered one of these chirping insects. I am pretty sure that it is a grasshopper not a cricket. It has quite short antennae. I think it is probably a common field grasshopper, though it might be a woodland grasshopper, or something else altogether.photo of grasshopper

They “sing” by rubbing their hind leg against a hardened part of the wing.
