Chinese New Year 2016

Monday February 8th is the start of the Chinese New Year, the second new moon after the winter solstice. 2016 is the year of the monkey. “Monkeys” are considered to be smart and charming, although the year itself is considered to be inauspicious.Photo of 3 wise monkeys ornament

My ornament of the three wise monkeys who “see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil” are actually based on  Japanese mythology. Although it is derived from Confucius’ principles and so originates from China. To Buddhists the message is to not dwell upon evil deeds, to have purity of mind. However, to the western mindset it is often interpreted as turning a blind eye to evil deeds and allowing them to happen!
